Dyslexia is an inherited condition that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition, and by poor spelling and decoding abilities.
These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.
WHAT
Having a struggling child is always difficult for parents. It is difficult for students as well. We strive to help alleviate these difficulties by offering assistance for children with dyslexia and for parents who aren’t sure where to go for help outside of the classroom. Our goal is to help students become successful learners using a multi-sensory approach to reading and spelling.

HOW WE HELP
These students are often very creative thinkers, excellent in sports, amazing musicians and are able to think outside of the box. Using our one-on-one or small group Orton-Gillingham based intervention program, students who struggle with Spelling and Reading can become successful in both of these academic areas. An optional screening program is also available for parents who are interested in finding out if their child is possibly dyslexic.
Higher Horizons Tutoring also works with students who struggle with Reading Fluency and Comprehension Strategies. Our Reading Fluency program focuses on increasing fluency through multiple readings of controlled language text. By using comprehension resources students work through a systematic process to help enhance their comprehension abilities and guide them to better understanding of the text they are reading. We also focus on all areas of the Writing Process and use rubrics to guide students’ writing.
Kindergarten through 12th grade students who struggle with math concepts are given support through engaging activities that use a combination of mathematical concepts including number sense, computation, geometry, spatial reasoning, critical thinking and active problem solving. Power standards are also identified at each grade level and resources are in place to ensure that those standards are solid skills for our students.
